Xonotic is a free (GPL), fast-paced first-person shooter that works on Windows, OS X and Linux. The project is geared towards providing addictive arena shooter gameplay which is all spawned and driven by the community itself. Xonotic is a direct successor of the Nexuiz project with years of development between them, and it aims to become the best possible open-source FPS (first-person-shooter) of its kind.

Xonotic has incredibly good graphics for an opensource game, while the gameplay is of course slightly inspired by several other games, but it is essentially a unique mixture of mostly original and different ideas which really make the game stand out. It could be considered most similar to Unreal Tournament and Quake at its heart, especially regarding teamplay and game mechanics.

The whole point of Xonotic is to stay Free Software (GPL, Software Libre.) Nexuiz ‘sold out’ to be proprietary. From my understanding, the version that will be on x-box won’t even be the real Nexuiz engine. It will be some new proprietary one. As far as I, and a lot of people, are concerned; Xonotic is where it’s at now. Large sections (I think most) of the Nexuiz team left Nexuiz to work on Xonotic.

This is because most of the the original creators people working on most of the game never wanted to sell out to be proprietary. The sell out went underneath them and behind their back. It was a slap in the face.

So, instead of giving up, they simply forked Nexuiz into Xonotic and kept on developing it as Xonotic. Also, as clearly seen, they went back and did massive overhauls of the game. Vehicles being added, new textures, weapons have been tweaked. Xonotic is far more updated than Nexuiz now.

I wasn’t aware a 0.6 was soon to come. I’m very excited about that.

I suppose Nexuiz is GPL too, cuz this game is Nexuiz with a few changes. I have to try it out to see which one is best.. but i have a lot of good times playing Nexuiz, and I’m thrilled that is going to Xbox Arcade.

If you are playing Nexuiz and not Xonotic, you are basically just not updating your game. Do it now. Xonotic is nicer ;)

Note that the version you can download now from the homepage is 0.5, while 0.6 will be released in the coming weeks.

Why making windows version? I’m on Linux and i wont test any game if they have windows version. Simple as that. Windows doesn’t provide any game or programme for Linux.

A fundamental part of the GNU philosophy is that a user should not be restricted from using the software. Because the game Is GNU, and the source is very easy to port to other OS, there is a philosophical obligation to make it avalible for those (often for reasons beond their control) that cannot or choose not to use the GNU/Liux operating system. I’m sure the Xonotic comunity is sorry that it can not cater to your discrimination…

I do understand GNU philosophy, but a user on windows seeing windows version of the game will never try Linux version or just very few of them which is not enough to expand Linux community.

As the one above me stated, well said, it is completely immoral to pose bias on a project simply for being compatible with Windows, one of the points of software freedom is being able to run the software however you like.
